Historical Background
The Biblia Pauperum developed from a considerable manuscript tradition beginning in the 13th century. During the second half of the 15th century, it became particularly widespread through block book and incunable editions.
The Latin version was especially influential and was produced in numerous block book editions. Its arrangement of text and illustrations also served as the model for German-language editions.
One important German edition was produced in Nördlingen in 1470 by painter Friedrich Walther and carpenter Hans Hurning. A year later, Hans Sporer, a calligrapher and block cutter from Nuremberg, produced another German version, simplifying some of the illustrations.
The Biblia Pauperum is especially notable for its use of biblical scenes and visual relationships to present biblical narratives through richly illustrated pages.
