Thirty-Six-Line Bamberg Bible (B36) – 15th-Century Latin Bible
Thirty-Six-Line Bamberg Bible (B36)
Explore the Thirty-Six-Line Bamberg Bible, also known as B36, one of the earliest printed Latin Bibles and an important example of European incunabula.
Dating to approximately 1459–1460, the B36 was produced shortly after the Gutenberg Bible and was based on a copy of Gutenberg's famous 42-line Bible (B42). The edition is distinguished by its 36 lines per column, compared with the 42 lines used in the Gutenberg Bible.
The complete edition contained approximately 1,764 printed pages, making it considerably more extensive than the Gutenberg Bible. Because of its size, copies were often divided into three volumes.
The Bible was printed using a modified form of the early type associated with Johann Gutenberg. Its connection with Bamberg and printer Albrecht Pfister has led scholars to associate the edition with Bamberg, although the original printing information does not explicitly identify the printer or place of publication.
