The Furtmeyr Bible – Illuminated Medieval Bible
Discover the magnificent Furtmeyr Bible, an exceptional illuminated Bible associated with the celebrated Regensburg Renaissance painter and illuminator Berthold Furtmeyr (active c. 1460–1501).
Created during the second half of the 15th century, the manuscript contains the Old Testament books from Genesis through Ruth and represents an important example of German medieval book illumination during the transition toward the Renaissance.
The manuscript is richly decorated with 355 pictorial fields and 20 illuminated initials, as well as three full-page miniatures. These include a portrait of the donors and their family, the Virgin Mary breastfeeding Jesus, and a striking depiction of the "Living Cross."
The manuscript is also notable for its richly colored artwork, nocturnal scenes, and distinctive Renaissance artistic elements.
Furtmeyr worked with members of his school of illuminators, making the manuscript an important example of the artistic tradition associated with the Ratisbon (Regensburg) School of Illumination.
