Koberger Bible of 1483 – Digital Facsimile

Explore the Koberger Bible of 1483, an important early German-language printed Bible and a notable example of the European incunabula period.

This digital edition contains 1,183 pages of high-resolution images, carefully assembled into a single PDF for digital viewing, historical research, and personal collection.

Historical Highlights

Printed in Nuremberg in 1483 by the renowned printer Anton Koberger (c. 1440–1513), this Bible was the ninth German-language Bible to be printed after the Mentelin Bible of 1466.

Koberger's edition is particularly notable for its rich decoration. The printer reused woodcuts originally created for the Bible printed in Cologne by Bartholomaeus of Unckel in 1478–1479.

The edition features numerous biblical illustrations and elaborate decorated initials. Some surviving copies were richly illuminated with tempera colors, gold and silver, punched-gold backgrounds, and ornamental acanthus-leaf decoration.

Among the particularly elaborate decorated initials are those beginning Genesis and Proverbs, incorporating figures such as prophets, angels, and animals into their decorative designs.
